Preamble for Foundational Digital Skills Curriculum

Digital skills have become the cornerstone for personal and professional growth in all sectors of the economy. Therefore, the Foundational Digital Skills Course is designed to empower individuals with the fundamental knowledge and capabilities needed to thrive in the modern interconnected and technology-driven world. Through this course, you will understand the digital landscape, harness the power of the digital tools, and build the confidence to work safely and adapt to the ever-changing digital ecosystem.

The Foundational Digital Skills Level course targets individuals without ICT (digital) competency from all walks of life; for example, senior citizens, farmers, traders (“Mama Mboga”), Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) among others. In general, the course is meant for everybody who desires to acquire competencies and skills to operate or use a digital device to perform their daily duties/roles and to access government services effectively.

By successfully completing this course, you will embark on the digital transformational journey, that will not only help you gain technical proficiency but also develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making skills that are essential in the digital era.

The course comprises of six (6) sessions that will be covered in 2 days and are free of charge. The session titles are as indicated in the table below.

This session introduces the learners on how to power and work with a digital device, using a mobile operating systems, identification and recognition of the common features in digital device, troubleshooting and problem solving in a digital device, and using the Internet, browsers, and search engines.  

"Doing Business in the Digital Space" is a dynamic session that equips trainees with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the digital era of commerce. Whether you are an entrepreneur looking to launch a digital start up, a business professional aiming to enhance your organization's online presence, or an enthusiast seeking to understand the digital business landscape, this course will provide you with valuable insights and strategies. The session includes: selecting suitable models of selling and buying in digital space, practice in digital marketing, using appropriate e-commerce platforms, and engagement in social media management.

This course is designed to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively access and utilize government services, understand their rights, and engage with government agencies in Kenya. 

The course will provide you with essential insights to interact with the Kenyan government efficiently and make the most of the available services. 

This session covers highlights on: Government digital Services, navigation through government websites, creation and management of accounts, accessing personal records and services, paying taxes and managing finances online, and applying for government services search as hustler fund, birth certificate, passport, certificate of good conduct.

The Cyber Hygiene for Everyone session is designed to equip ordinary citizens with a basic understanding of the opportunities and risks of using digital devices and equip them with simple, practical skills needed to defend against cyber threats and safeguard personal information in an increasingly digital world. This session introduces cyber hygiene by creating a simple understanding of passwords and authentication, safe browsing for adults and children, social media opportunities and risks, and protecting money and reputation by identifying and countering social engineering schemes, value and protect simple data resource such as a contact list.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the management of electronic waste (e-waste), addressing the growing environmental and health challenges associated with electronic products' end-of-life disposal. Participants will gain a strong foundation in e-waste concepts, recycling techniques, and sustainable practices. The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to the responsible handling and management of e-waste in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
